Sania Mirza is 5ft 8in tall leading professional tennis player from India who started playing tennis at age of six and turning professional in 2003. She is the highest ranked female tennis player ever from India till now. She currently ranks at 31 which is her career highest.
In 2003, she won the Wimbledon Championships Girls’ Doubles title in 2003, teaming up with Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.
In 2004, she finished runner up at the Asian Tennis Championship.
On February 12, 2005, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title defeating Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the Hyderabad Open finals. In the same year, she became the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2005 US Open, defeating Mashona Washington, Maria Elena Camerin and Marion Bartoli. She was also awareded as WTA Newcomer of the year in 2006.
On January 26, 2000 Sania Mirza was conferred with prestigious Padma Sri award for her contribution to tennis on the eve of the Republic Day in India. At the 2006 Doha Asian Games, Sania won the silver in the women’s singles category and the gold in the mixed doubles partnering Leander Paes. She was also part of the Indian women’s team that won the silver in the team event. In the same year at Sunfeast Kolkata Open singles, she reached semi-finals, losing to eventual champion, Martina Hingis 6-1 6-0.
In 2007, recently completed Bank of the West Classic tournament, she reached third career final after defeating Akiko Morigami, Tatiana Golovin, Patty Schnyder and Sybille Bammer but lost to number one seed Anna Chakvetadze 6-2 6-3. But she claimed the Doubles title with partner Shahar Peer beating Anna Chakvetadze and Victoria Azarenka 6-4 7-6.
